July 26, 2007 ~ Saskatoon's First KidsFringe Venue The Saskatoon Fringe is collaborating with The Refinery and Wide Open, Saskatoon's own family theatre company, to develop a dedicated children's venue. This year, all the Fringe shows for children will take place at one venue, The Refinery, from Friday August 3rd – Saturday Aug 11th. This venue especially for kids will offer different hours than the adult Fringe, running daily from 11am to 7pm. Families can come and enjoy a days worth of entertainment without having to rush to another location! The site will be alive with children's activities and a family friendly food court to keep everyone happy between performances. Inside the venue, there will be nine different children's shows from local, national, and international artists who offer a wide range of stories and performance styles from storytelling, songs, to puppet shows. The daily schedule will alternate, allowing families to attend at the same time on a different day and see a different performance. The vast and unique experience of these three dynamic organizations will insure the KidsFringe is an exciting experience for the whole family. The Fringe brings years of producing this diverse annual festival. The Refinery brings its fantastic facilities and the St. James’ community, Wide Open brings its experience performing at Fringes across the country and producing children’s entertainment right here in Saskatoon. All the show descriptions were launched at the fundraiser last night and are on our website for Fringegoers to start planning their ticket buys.” Entertainment for the evening included Sa-SKIT-toon, a local improv comedy troupe who has been a part of 25th Street Theatre’s youth program over the last few years. “Our Youth Arts Initiative has had tremendous success matching emerging talent with professional artists and as a first step in a number of young music and theatre careers.” The program was launched in 2003 and also gives opportunities to young volunteers who want to help plan the Fringe. Headlining the event was TJ Dawe, a true favorite of Saskatoon Fringe audiences, with his new show “Maxim and Cosmo”. “We just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have TJ perform in Saskatoon this year.” With over a decade of Fringe Festival touring experience on the Canadian circuit and nearly a dozen hit shows to his credit, TJ is Fringe success story. His summer will be spent performing at the birthplace of all Fringe Festivals, Edinburgh, Scotland. Fringe Festival organizers are looking forward to another pre-Fringe event next spring.
